Belfast Therapy Garden Hailed In Europe

A pioneering therapy garden aimed at improving the quality of life and wellbeing of children in Belfast has been hailed at the Access City Award in Brussels.

Belfast City Council's therapy garden at Musgrave Park in south Belfast was praised in the 'Built Environment and Public Spaces' category at yesterday’s event, held at the European Commission to mark European Day for People with Disabilities.

The garden project began in September 2011 and involves a series of themed spaces.

Councillor Máire Hendron, the council’s disability champion, attended the event in Brussels.

She said: "For many years now, the council has been at the forefront of improving access for disabled people, whether it be in terms of access to our own buildings and facilities or assisting other organisations in this regard.

"To have reached the final shortlist represents a huge boost for Belfast City Council and it’s a massive vote of confidence in our approach to tackling accessibility in the city."

Belfast was one of seven EU cities to be shortlisted for 2014 Access City Award, aimed at encouraging cities with at least 50,000 citizens to improve accessibility.

Belfast was the only city in the UK and Ireland to make it to the final shortlist, out of 102 entries from 23 European countries.

Gothenburg was announced as the overall winner of the 2014 Access City Award.
