Willie Frazer's Libya Bed Push Restricted

A 'bed push' organised by loyalist campaigner Willie Frazer has been restricted by the Parades Commission.

The parade has been organised for 14 December to raise money to send victims of the IRA to Libya to seek compensation for the country's support of the republican organisation, Mr Frazer said.

The parade was initially due to begin on Ardoyne Road and travel through Hesketh Road, Crumlin Road, around Ardoyne Roundabout, down Crumlin Road, Cambrai Street, Shankill Road, Peters Hill, North Street, Royal Avenue, Castle Place and finish at City Hall.

But the parade will now be prohibited from passing between the junction of Hesketh Road and Crumlin Road and the junction of Crumlin Road and Cambrai Street.

It is also prohibited from passing beyond the junction of Peters Hill and Townsend Street.

The Parades Commission said it had heard representation from Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association (CARA) and Sinn Féin, as well as a delegation representing city centre businesses.

It said it had taken into consideration recent comments from elected representative regarding parades passing through the city centre during one of the busiest retail periods in the year.

The Commission also said that, although the organiser intends to carry out a street collection, no such permit has been applied for. It said other charities have applied for and attained permits to collect in the city centre.

It also noted that this is not a 'traditional' parade.
