Minister Outlines Cultural Legacy Plan For L'Derry

A three-year legacy plan for Derry~Londonderry as it nears the end of its years as the UK City og Culture has been revealed.

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín revealed that over £2 million has been approved for legacy projects, saying that her department had "learnt a lot" from the city's time as the Culture Capitol.

She said: "As we move forward into 2014, I want to widen the focus out from Derry to Strabane, Limavady and Coleraine including co-operation with Donegal."

"With the new councils being established in 2015, it makes sense that all of the north west region benefits."

Ms Ní Chuilín said she would set up a "company limited by guarantee" to deliver City of Culture legacy programmes and activities.

"I will also set up a Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) north west office to help the new body become established," she said.

"I will fund neighbourhood renewal areas to support the delivery of cultural strategies.

"I also want a feasibility study to be undertaken to consider venues for cultural hubs across the region.

"I have approved funding for the purchase of a mobile marquee which will enable deprived communities to host events such as the hugely popular tea dances."

L'Derry Culture Legacy Plan Revealed

New Legacy Inquest System Launched To Speed Up Investigations
The Department of Justice has launched a £55 million initiative with a new Coroner investigation unit in a bid speed up legacy inquests and address all outstanding cases. It comes as some of the "most sensitive, complex and high profile deaths" during the Troubles are yet to be fully investigated, according to the department.

DUP 'Unaware' Of Funding For Legacy Requests
Arlene Foster has claimed "no one in the DUP was aware" of funding for legacy requests. The DUP leader said it would be "astonishing" if the government granted funding. The statement came after DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson told The View programme he was "unaware" of an alleged deal to release money for Troubles legacy inquests.

L'Derry Conference To Discuss Culture Legacy
A conference is to take place in L'Derry this week that will consult on how the city can maximise the long-term potential of the UK City of Culture status. The Legacy Conference will be held on Friday 05 July at the City Hotel and will reflect on the first six months of the City of Culture and how the city has benefited from the accolade.
