Legal advisory service on ‘whistleblowing’ launched by ICAI
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI) has announced the establishment of a new legal advisory service for its members on their ‘whistleblowing’ obligations under relevant legislation.
The service will provide a point of first reference advice for chartered accountants in business and in practice dealing with company law changes and new money laundering legislation.
Announcing the new service, ICAI President James Hunt said: “Auditors and accountants are subject to numerous reporting obligations under company, tax, EU and criminal law. Often these obligations are confused and contradictory.
”The purpose of this new service is to provide advice to our members that are dealing with new and complex legislation. Our advisors in the North and South are solicitors used to dealing with these issues. Our members are serious about their obligations and we are providing this service to assist them.”
The ICAI said that the service would operate separately in the Republic and Northern Ireland.
In the Republic of Ireland the service will provide advice on the implications of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act of 2001 in addition to company and tax law.
In Northern Ireland it will deal with the implications of the Proceeds of Crime Act, 2002.
