Body find may be missing loyalist
Speculation was mounting today that a body found in Newtownabbey is that of missing loyalist Alan McCullough.
Workmen apparently spotted the body in a shallow grave on the Aughnabrack Road in Mallusk early on Thursday.
The area was immediately closed by police and forensic scientists moved in to examine the remains.
Chief Constable Hugh Orde has indicated that the body may be that of Mr McCullough.
While police have yet to officially confirm the identity of the body the Chief Constable confirmed that the man's family had been informed of the search.
He said: "The location makes it entirely possible that it is Mr McCullough but we can't confirm that until we are sure."
McCullough, 21, went missing last Wednesday after returning to Northern Ireland following a loyalist paramilitary feud which involved C Company chief Johnny Adair and other senior UDA leaders.
His mother said her son had been given assurances from the UDA that he would be safe. However, sources indicate that the UDA was involved in his disappearance last week.
