Sainsbury's announce 2,000 UK jobs

Sainsbury's is to create 100 new convenience store outlets at Shell petrol stations.

The programme, to be rolled out by Sainsbury's over the next three years, is anticipated to lead to the creation of up to 2,000 jobs.

The announcement follows the successful trial of six convenience stores based on petrol retail forecourts in southern England.

Although no details have yet been released on where the Sainsbury Local stores will be located, Sainsbury's Chief Executive, Sir Peter Davis, said that by working with Shell a number of areas in the UK were set to benefit from the convenience store petrol retail deal.

Sainsbury's latest trading figures last month showed that profits had risen by 17% to £667 million on last year, despite only a 2.3% rise in sales over the year.

The supermarket chain, which has embarked on a cost cutting scheme, is bidding to pull back recent ground lost to rival Tesco.

Tesco recently unveiled a plan to rebrand T&S convenience stores as Tesco Express.
