SDLP's Martin Morgan takes Belfast Lord Mayor post

The SDLP's Martin Morgan has become Belfast's new Lord Mayor.

The north Belfast councillor, who replaces Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey, was voted in during a ballot of councillors at City Hall last night.

Mr Morgan beat the UUP's Bob Stoker and DUP's Robin Newton to the top post.

Mr Morgan said he would be focusing on partnership during his term and has promised to work with all aspects of strategic social partners in the city.

Controversially, Mr Morgan said the Irish Tricolour would remain in the mayor's office alongside the Union Jack as well as the flag of the European Union.

Supporting him in his new role will be Margaret Crooks of the Ulster Unionist Party, who was elected deputy lord mayor at last night's vote.
