Loyalists Plan 10,000-Strong Protest

Loyalists organising a flag protest at Belfast City Hall for next month have lodged a fresh application with the Parades Commission.

The protest would see 40 bands, 5,000 supporters and 5,000 supporters take to the streets in the city centre.

The group, Loyal Peaceful Protesters, have requested to hold the march on what is one of the busiest shopping days in the run-up to the Christmas holidays – Saturday 30 November.

The organisation has applied for permission to gather at Belfast's City Hall at 1pm. They would then march along Donegall Place, Royal Avenue and Lower North Street, before walking down the Shankill Road and Tennent Street, with the protest finishing at 4pm.

An initial application for the protest had been withdrawn on Sunday night, but it is understood this was only to clarify the number of supporters that could be involved.

Now, the Parades Commission will determine whether the protest can proceed lawfully, and whether any restrictions will be imposed.

Protests in the city centre started in December 2012, after a decision was made to restrict the flying of the Union flag at City Hall to just designated days.
