Aung San Suu Kyi To Visit NI

Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is to visit Belfast on Thursday, the UK Government has confirmed.

Ms San Suu Kyi, who is chairperson of the National League for Democracy in Burma, requested to visit the region as part of her tour to the UK.

It is understood she will arrive in Belfast and will be welcomed by Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers. She will then travel to Stormont to meet junior ministers Jonathan Bell and Jennifer McCann as the First and Deputy First Ministers are in America.

She will also attend Parliament Buildings to meet with NI's political parties, before meeting pupils from Wellington College and Aquinas Grammar School.

Aung San Suu Kyi spent two decades under house arrest in her home country due to her efforts to bring democracy to Burma, which is ruled by the military.
