New Elective Surgical Unit helps cut waiting lists

Health Minister, Des Browne has today officially opened a new Elective Surgical Unit at Lagan Valley Hospital.

Commenting on the new eight bed facility, the Minister confirmed patient waiting times for elective surgery at the hospital had been cut since its inception.

He added: "In line with Developing Better Services, it is very encouraging to see the beginning of a collaboration with the Royal Victoria and Belfast City Hospitals to treat more patients who are waiting for elective surgery.”

The Elective Surgery Unit, which opened in February, has helped Down Lisburn Trust cut its 18 month waiting list. The Trust is now utilising the unit to undertake elective surgery for patients of similar waiting lists at the Royal Victoria and Belfast City Hospitals.
