Mortar Device Found In L'Derry
A "viable mortar type device" has been found at a PSNI station in the Strand Road area of L'Derry during a security alert.
The bomb was found on Lawrence Hill iduring the early hours of this morning.
Acting District Commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin said there had been "a complete disregard for innocent lives by those individuals who left the device in the popular residential area.
"Close to 1,000 people had to leave their homes last night because of the misguided actions of the people responsible for this incident," he said.
"It is only by good fortune that we are not talking about loss of life or serious damage to property. While the device will be forensically examined in due course it is safe to say that the intent here was to kill or injure and create fear within the community."
SDLP Derry City Councillor John Boyle said: "Those who are responsible for placing this device are the enemies of the people. This irresponsible act had the potential to cause the loss of life or limb and caused maximum disruption throughout the night as families were forced to leave their homes and huge disruption at peak traffic times this morning as people were making their way to work and school.
"This is completely unacceptable and serves no purpose. Anyone with any information on this incident should contact the PSNI immediately."
The police cordons have been reduced in the area and the only road currently affected is Lawrence Hill. All other residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
Anyone with information about the device is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Residents Evacuated After Discovery Of Suspicious Device
A number of houses have been evacuated in Londonderry following the discovery of a suspicious object on a car windscreen, at Kinnego Park in the Foyle Springs area. Army bomb experts have been in the area since the incident was reported. According to police, 18 homes have been evacuated and the area has been cordoned off.

A viable device found during a security alert in north Belfast is believed to be linked to a hate crime. Police and army bomb disposal experts attended the scene at Atlantic Avenue on Thursday, 25 August. A number of residents were evacuated from their homes, however they have since returned.

Viable Device Found In Newry Had Detonated
A device found in Newry on Thursday had exploded, according to police. The device was discovered on the Barracric Road and a railway line between Newry and Dundalk was forced to close. It has since been re-opened. No damage was caused and there were no reports of any injuries. The device has been taken away by the police for further examination.
