Leading Cancer Scientist Appointed Queen's President
A world-renowned cancer scientist has been appointed as the new President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast.
Professor Patrick Johnston, who is Dean of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s, will take up post early in 2014.
With the new appointment, Professor Johnston will become the 12th Vice-Chancellor in the university’s 168-year history.
Originally from L'Derry, Professor Johnston has led the development of a new international Medical School at Queen’s and a world-leading Institute of Health Sciences since 2007. He is also former Director of the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at Queen’s.
In 2012 he was recognised for excellence in medical science when he was elected to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Last week, he was awarded the 2013 international Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Prize, recognising his work in translating discovery science for the benefit of cancer patients.
Queen’s Pro-Chancellor Sir David Fell, who chaired the appointment panel, said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Patrick Johnston as our new President and Vice-Chancellor. Professor Johnston, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, is an outstanding academic with a distinguished record of achievement. Throughout his career, he has led transformational projects, and combines vision with a determination and passion to deliver change which will benefit society as a whole.
"As one of the world’s foremost experts in cancer research, he has shown extraordinary leadership in making Queen’s and Northern Ireland a truly innovative world-leading centre for medical research."
Speaking about his appointment, Professor Johnston commented: "This is a proud day for both me and my family and I thank Queen’s University for choosing me to be its next President and Vice-Chancellor. I very much look forward to leading this distinguished institution and working alongside its exceptional staff and students. It is an honour and privilege to be given this opportunity to further develop and enhance the reputation and standing of Queen’s.
"In an environment that throws up many significant challenges, both at home and abroad, Queen’s objective is to become an international leader in both education and research. I will work tirelessly to achieve this objective, which will bring benefits not only to the University but to the local economy and to everyone who lives in Northern Ireland."

Man Arrested In Connection With Raymond Johnston
A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Raymond Johnston. Mr Johnston, aged 28, was shot in front of his partner and child at his house in the Glenbawn Avenue area of Poleglass on 13 February. A 37-year-old man has also been detained by the PSNI under the Terrorism Act.

Police Appeal Following Spate Of Burglaries In Co Down
Police believe a spate of burglaries in the Co Down area may be linked. Three men were disturbed during two break-ins in Warrenpoint and Mayobridge on Friday, 29 December. It is thought the suspects may have been seen in Kilkeel and Mayobridge on the same evening.

Appeal Over Missing Broughshane Man
Police have appealed to the public for help in tracing the whereabouts of a man from Broughshane, Ballymena, County Antrim. Geoffrey Adams, who is 53 years old, was last seen at Antrim Area Hospital on the afternoon of Sunday 8 February. Police have described him as 5' 9", very thin, bald with a grey beard, crooked teeth and a crooked nose.
