O'Kane Poultry Fined £1,000

O'Kane Poultry Ltd has been fined a total of £1,000 plus court costs at Ballymena Magistrates' Court for making polluting discharges to a waterway.

On 23 March 2012, a report of a pollution incident at a poultry farm at 84 Benvardin Road, Ballymena, which is owned and operated by O'Kane Poultry Limited, was made to the NIEA via the pollution hotline by a member of the public.

Upon investigation, an Officer from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency observed poultry farm waste impacting on the Burn Gushet River in County Antrim. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to a poultry farm at 84 Benvardin Road, Ballymena.

On 28 November 2012, a report of a pollution incident at a chicken and turkey slaughtering and rendering facility at 170 Larne Road, Ballymena, which is owned and operated by O’Kane Poultry Limited, was made to NIEA via the pollution hotline by a member of the public.

Upon investigation localized chicken waste contamination was found on the bed of Deerfin Burn, Pennybridge, Ballymena. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to O'Kane Poultry Ltd, a chicken and turkey slaughtering and rendering facility at 170 Larne Road, Ballymena.

The firm was fined £500 for each offence.
