Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A man was convicted at Omagh Crown Court for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.
Michael Nelson (47) of The Hollows, Moy, claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £32,655 while failing to declare his partner's employment. He was given a one year prison sentence suspended for three years.
Mr Nelson will also have to repay the money he wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
Work To Begin On Pedestrian Crossings
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has announced work is set to begin on two £25,000 schemes to provide pedestrian crossings at Hillhead Road, Stewartstown and Orritor Street, Cookstown.
Work will begin at Main Street, Stewartstown, on Tuesday 1 October and at Orritor Street, Cookstown on Monday 7 October to provide new Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent (PUFFIN) crossings. Both are expected to be completed within one week.
The most significant differences between Puffin and Pelican crossings are that Puffins have the request button beside the pedestrian and there are no flashing amber signals for pedestrians. Drivers are held at a red signal until pedestrians have completed their crossing.
Mr Kennedy said: "These new Puffins will deliver enhanced pedestrian safety and traffic flow features.
"Puffin Crossings are safer for pedestrians at some locations. They are of particular benefit to more vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
"One of the many benefits of Puffin crossings is that the time provided for pedestrians to cross the road is managed using sensors that detect people still on the crossing."
L'Derry Man Fined For Planning Offence
Mr John Doherty of Ardan Road Culmore Londonderry was fined £20,000 at L'Derry Magistrates' Court.
He was found guilty to a continued non compliance with DOE Planning Enforcement Notices and was also made to pay a total of £1,400 legal costs.
Mr Doherty was charged with the unauthorised erection of a building, the provision of fence and gates and hard core at his property and the unauthorised use of buildings and land for the depositing of vehicles at Coney Road Culmore Londonderry.
Mr Doherty was prosecuted under Article 72 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991.

Dunmurray Pedestrian Safety Improvement Scheme Complete
A new pedestrian safety improvement scheme has been successfully completed at the McKinstry Road Roundabout in Dunmurrary, Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has announced. The scheme includes realignment of the roundabout and the provision of three new PUFFIN controlled pedestrian crossings on Creighton Road, McKinstry Road and Stewartstown Road.

NIR 'On Line' Dangers Highlighted
Translink in partnership with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has reminded everyone about the importance of rail safety this summer. They are working together to prevent potentially hazardous incidents of trespassing and dangerous behaviour on or near NI Railway (NIR) trains, tracks, railway crossings and on station platforms.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has welcomed the completion of a scheme to provide enhanced crossing facilities and improve road safety on Holywood Road, Belfast. The Minister met with the pupils and staff from Mitchell House Special School to view the upgraded PUFFIN crossing which is used regularly by the school community.

£55,000 Toucan Puffin Crossing Completed In Dundonald
A £55,000 pedestrian and cycle toucan puffin crossing has been completed on East Link Road, Dundonald. The Department for Regional Development said the decision to provide the crossing was based upon "criteria relating to the number of pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road and the volume of vehicles using it".
