Rise In NI Households Presenting As Homeless
The number of Northern Ireland households presented as homeless to the NI Housing Executive during January to March this year increased by 15%, when compared to the previous quarter.
This was one of the findings of the latest Northern Ireland Housing Bulletin, published by the Department for Social Development today.
4,923 households presented as homeless during this period, indicating an increase of 652.
For the period, the total number of new dwelling starts was 1,720, signifying a decrease of 18% on the same period in 2012. However, the total number of new dwelling completions was 2,004, an increase of 5% on the same period in 2012.
The number of households accepted by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive as full duty applicants for the quarter January to March 2013 was 2,128, a decrease of 9% compared to the previous quarter.
The reason categories with the highest proportion of full duty applicants were those citing accommodation not reasonable (27%) and those citing a sharing breakdown or family dispute (19%).
Of those accepted as full duty applicants during the quarter, 205 were discharged.
Between the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013, residential property prices fell by 1%.
For the first quarter of 2013, the standardised residential property price was 6% lower than the same quarter in 2012 and 13% lower than in the first quarter of 2005.

NI Unemployment Continues To Rise
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland has risen, according to the latest figures. The Labour Force Survey (LFS) showed that, while the period August - October 2012 showed a decline of 0.4% on the 8.2% rate recorded in the previous quarter, the number is still up 0.8% from the 6.9% rate recorded one year ago.

Elderly Population Increasing
The number of older people in Northern Ireland is increasing, according to a report published by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) Between 2011 and 2012 the number of adults aged 65 and over increased by 2.6% to 272,800; the largest year-on-year increase since 1981.

Q1 Crown Court Cases Increase 10%
Figures released today show a 10% increase in the number of Crown court cases from January to March 2013, compared with the same quarter the previous year. There were 477 Crown cases received during the first quarter, in comparison to 435 received during the same period in 2012.

14 people reported a firework related injury in the 2012 Halloween period, 17th October to the 14th Novemebr, according to statistics published today. This was 11 less than in 2011 and the lowest number since the data collection began in 1996, according to The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS).
