All-Ireland Fleadh Opens In L'Derry

The all-Ireland Fleadh has been opened today in L'Derry by Martin McGuinness and President Michael D. Higgins, marking the first time the event has been held in Northern Ireland.

The deputy First Minister joined the Irish President in Guildhall Square to mark the opening of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013, which will run from 11 - 18 August.

The deputy First Minister said: "This is the start of a momentous week for the City, the north west, and for everyone in Ireland. This is the first time the Fleadh has been hosted in the north of Ireland and has the potential to attract 300,000 people; generating £40m for the north west.

"I commend and thank Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for their foresight in bringing the All Ireland Fleadh to Derry. This was a historic decision and I’m sure this will not only be a great Fleadh but also one of the best ever, as we celebrate the very finest in music, song, dance and all the great things our culture has to offer."

It is thought 20,000 musicians are to visit the city throughout the week to compete in what is being described by the organisers as "the Olympics of traditional music".

"As part of the regeneration of the North West and investment to support Derry as City of Culture, the Executive has provided in excess of £30million in funding," Mr McGuinness continued.

"This is money well spent and we are determined to make sure there is a lasting legacy for the north west."

He continued: "The day we opened the Peace Bridge I said it was much more than a foot bridge, it was an iconic piece of art symbolising a brighter, better future for all. Hosting the Fleadh is another step in our new future and it is appropriate for us to host it in our year as City of Culture."

L'Derry Mayor Martin Reilly said: "I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Fleadh Cheoil organisers who have been working in close partnership with Derry City Council, the PSNI, the City Centre Initiative and key stakeholders to ensure everything is in place for a successful event. The Fleadh Cheoil is an amazing event with some of the world’s most highly acclaimed Irish traditional musicians coming to our city for this unique celebration. It promises to be one of the highlights of the City of Culture year and a unique opportunity for us to show visitors how far we have progressed and what we have to offer in terms of tourism attractions and benefits.

"We are hopeful that this event will attract repeat business and put the city on the map as a great city destination. From an economic point of view, the Fleadh will also bring huge benefits to local businesses, accommodation providers and retailers."
