Shots Fired At PSNI Landrover

Shots fired at a police Landrover in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast last night have been described by the PSNI as "a blatant attempt to murder officers".

The gun attack was reported in the Brompton Park area yesterday evening at 10.30pm.

Two shots are reported to have been fired at officers who were on patrol in the area, near to where a loyalist protest was taking place.

The PSNI said the officers were inside the vehicle at the time.

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerard McCabe said the PSNI needed to confirm whether or not shots were indeed fired.

"There has been no confirmation if indeed two shots were fired at a PSNI landrover last night. As far as local people are concerned it could have been fireworks.

"Speculation or claims that there was an attack on the PSNI vehicle are not helpful and the sooner this is either confirmed or refuted the better.

"The community in Ardoyne have undergone a stressful time recently with the Orange Order cranking up tensions with their weekly protests. The last thing they need are any unrepresentative micro groups within the area trying to make themselves relevant."
