'Pop-Up' Restaurant To Train Unemployed

A new restaurant has opened in Belfast's Titanic quarter that will provide catering and hospitality training for unemployed people in Lisburn and Belfast.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast officially opened the 'pop up' eaterie yesterday, marking a new project for the council's HARTE (Hospitality and Retail Training for Employment) programme.

The programme will run for the next two weeks to coincide with the World Police and Fire Games.

Participants of the HARTE programme will be supported by trainers from Belfast Metropolitan College to run the HARTE@theMET pop up restaurant at the Belfast Met Titanic Quarter Campus.

Trainees will cook and serve a range of foods, as part of a bid to refine the skills they have been training in; good customer service, catering and beverage services.

Lord Mayor Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said: "It gives me great pleasure to open the HARTE@theMET pop up restaurant today which will give the HARTE trainees from Belfast and Lisburn the fantastic opportunity to run a restaurant over the next weeks and showcase their new-found hospitality and management skills. This challenge will also lead to the trainees not only gaining valuable work experience but improve their employment prospects.

"I hope employers who are recruiting staff take the opportunity to call in and meet the trainees at this innovative eatery in Belfast Met's Titanic Quarter Campus. I would also urge the public to get behind this inspiring initiative and visit the restaurant."

Running since 2009, the HARTE programme provides training and support to unemployed people living in the Belfast and Lisburn City Council areas who want to work in the hospitality, tourism and retail industries.

The programme is funded by Belfast City Council, Lisburn City Council and the European Social Fund with the support of the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL). It is delivered by Time Associates with the support of GEMS NI and Belfast Metropolitan College.
