Govt Criticised Over IRA Deaths

The UK government has been criticised by the European Court of Human Rights for failing to hold inquests into the deaths of two IRA men 23 years ago.

Martin McCaughey and Dessie Grew were killed by the SAS while armed with AK47 rifles.

The shootings happened at a farm shed near Loughgall in County Armagh that was suspected as being an IRA arms hold.

The court found that the UK government had breached the European Convention on Human Rights by not holding a full inquiry.

The European Court of Human Rights case was brought about by relatives of the families involved.

Sinn Féin MP for Mid Ulster Francie Molloy welcomed the ruling.

He said: "The ruling by the European Court of Human Rights against the British government for failing to hold inquests into the circumstances of the deaths of two IRA volunteers Dessie Grew and Martin McCaughey justifies clearly the families position in their search for justice.

"It is clear from this ruling that there was a differential policy for the families of republicans than that for other families. There should have been no difference and the family should have received an inquest.

"The fact that this did not happen, a fact which has been focused upon in this ruling, will only serve to reinforce the view that Irish republicans and their families were not treated equally to others.

"Sinn Féin will continue to support both the Grew and McCaughey families in their search for justice."
