US Envoy To Chair Parades And Flags Group
The former US envoy to Northern Ireland Dr Richard Haass has been announced as the independent chair of an all-party group being established to deal with the issues that divide Northern Irish society.
First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness made the announcement yesterday.
Dr Haass was the agreed first choice as chairman among the five parties represented in the Executive.
The all-party group will focus on such issues as parades and protests, flags, symbols, emblems and related matters and will put forward a series of recommendations by the end of the year.
The First Minister and deputy First Minister said: "We are deeply grateful that an international figure of Dr Haass’s standing has agreed to facilitate these important discussions which we hope will provide long term and sustainable solutions that are in the best interests of the community."
Dr Haass was US Envoy to Northern Ireland from 2001-03 and is President of the Council on Foreign Relations, a US based independent think tank.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.
