McGuinness Adviser To Lose Job Over SPAD

Martin McGuinness's special adviser Paul Kavanagh faces losing his job, following the approval of the Special Advisers Bill.

The Bill, which forbids anyone with a serious conviction from becoming a Stormont special adviser, has received Royal Assent.

Sinn Féin's Paul Kavanagh spent 14 years in jail for killing three people in an IRA bombing campaign in England in 1981.

He has three weeks to appeal, otherwise he will lose his job.

The 'SPAD' Bill was tabled by Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader Jim Allister, following a campaign by Anne Travers to have Mary McArdle removed from her post as adviser to Sinn Féin Culture Minister Caral Ni Chuilin.

Ms McArdle had previously been convicted for her role in the IRA murder of Ms Travers's sister Ann in Belfast in 1984.

Mary McArdle was then moved to another job within Sinn Féin.

The party opposed the legislation, claiming it was against the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement.
