Southern Trust To Outsource Care
The Southern Health Trust is to outsource all its Domiciliary Care Packages to the private sector, according to the NIPSA union.
Alison Millar, NIPSA Deputy General Secretary said: "Yet again our elderly and most vulnerable in our society are being impacted by further cuts to our health service. While the private sector is delivering the service cheaper the facts are that NIPSA has concerns that in order to make a profit the private sector are cutting the service to our elderly.
"Under TYC, J Compton has stated that 180 hospital beds are to close and the elderly are to be cared for in their homes and their community. The reality of the situation is that our older people will get a much diminished service with minimal care being provided. Not what is promised or suggested in TYC."
A local NIPSA representative added: "Current Domiciliary Care staff employed by the Trust are worried and concerned about their future job security if no further work is allocated to them as Trust employees."
Alliance Health spokesperson Kieran McCarthy said: "This news is very concerning. The sector is already under pressure and while the trust has said no jobs will be lost, this will be a worry for all involved.
"Transforming your care is supposed to deliver a better and more efficient service. Yet all I constantly see is that plan failing to deliver, as the trusts seem to move further away from implementing the main document.
"This is only the start of what I suspect will be a long process. Despite assurances from both the Minister and John Compton (Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board) at a recent Health Committee meeting that the right funding is available to complete Transforming You Care, my suspicions over the process remain.
"Essentially this is about the care our elderly population receive and we must ensure this continues to the highest standard. The Alliance Party will continue to fight any attempt to privatise the Health Service and I will continue to monitor this situation."
NIPSA said it was holding meetings with members to inform them of the decision and would be challenging the Trust.
