Power Loss Expected On 11th
Some residents who live close to 11th night bonfires could experience a loss of electricity, if flames get too close to power lines.
Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has issued a safety warning to communities to build bonfires in safe places; away from overhead power lines.
"We are working with the local communities and elected representatives to highlight the dangers but, in some cases, we may need to cut electricity supplies and customers in the area may be without electricity until the danger has passed and NIE emergency crews have completed any repairs and safety checks," a statement said.
"We have had reports of bonfires being erected under or close to high voltage electricity lines. This is a very dangerous practice as the smoke and heat from bonfires can cause electrical arcing and sparking, and in some cases lines may be brought down by the fire. Bonfire debris and flames anywhere near power lines and electricity substations are a serious risk to everyone's safety and wellbeing.
"Bonfires also need to be kept clear of hidden hazards, such as trees which might have electricity lines running close to them. Electricity can jump gaps so you don't need to come into direct contact with live equipment to risk electrocution. The electricity network is safe when left alone but can be potentially lethal if you get too close.
"Our advice is simple, stay safe this summer by staying well away from overhead electricity lines and equipment."

Minister announces £30m electricity initiative
Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson has announced plans to invest £30 million in a new initiative aimed at reducing electricity bills for Northern Ireland's businesses. It is hoped that the funding, which is part of a draft budget, will help businesses save 10% on their electricity bills.

Ten people have died from touching overhead power lines since 2001, Northern Ireland Electricity has warned. The electricity network launched a major campaign today to make farmers, contractors, DIY enthusiasts and others aware of the dangers of felling trees and cutting hedges near lines.

NIE condemn chainsaw damage
Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has strongly condemned vandals who used a chainsaw to cut through an electricity pole resulting in the loss of electricity to 800 homes in Co Armagh. NIE were alerted to the problem when a resident reported seeing an overhead cable hanging lower than usual in Craigavon.
