L'Derry To Host All Ireland Pipe Championships

More than 2,000 musicians in over 70 Pipe Bands are expected to converge in L'Derry this summer to contest the 68th All Ireland Pipe Band Championship, at St Columb's Park.

The event is coming to L'Derry as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.

Ray Hall, Chairman of Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association Northern Ireland Branch said: "The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Northern Ireland Branch are delighted that Derry~Londonderry is hosting the 68th All Ireland Pipe Band Championships.

"There is a rich cultural heritage of piping in Ireland and along with our counterparts in the Irish Pipe Band Association it gives us the opportunity to be involved in the City of Culture celebrations by showcasing in competition, the finest Pipe Bands and Drum Majors from Ireland and further afield."

Culture Company 2013 Chief Executive Shona McCarthy added: "It is a privilege to be able to welcome any All Ireland Championship to the city during our year as City of Culture and this one promises to be one of the highlights of the summer. It will be a great family day out, a wonderful spectacle and, I'm sure, fierce competition to be crowned All Ireland champions on the day."

Helicopter 'Top Cover' As Bomb Defused
Suburban Glengormley returned to normal yesterday evening after the Army dealt with a pipe bomb in Harmin Park. The PSNI helicopter was overhead of the Newtownabbey district - close to north Belfast - for most of Monday afternoon and some residents were asked to leave their homes, while the examination was carried out.

Pipe bomb attacks continue in Country Antrim
County Antrim has been the focus of several overnight incidents involving pipe bombs, which saw one Portrush man narrowly escape injury when his house was singled out for attack. The device was thrown through the window of the house in Glenmanus Park at around midnight on Monday 23 July, but failed to go off.

Four Suspected Pipe Bombs Recovered In Creggan Operation
Four suspected pipe bombs have been recovered by police from inside the City Cemetery in Creggan, L'Derry, following a public safety operation on Tuesday 11th April. The operation was implemented following the discovery of a suspected pipe bomb in the cemetery just after 6.30am yesterday morning.

Inter-Ireland Gas Pipe Completed
Significant development of the gas industry in five major towns and cities along the route of the new inter-Ireland gas pipe is expected to follow completion of the natural gas interconnection. Antrim, Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon - including Portadown and Lurgan - and Newry are all expected to benefit from the gas facility.
