USPCA reveal increase in animal cruelty
The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) has revealed that the number of acts of cruelty to animals in Northern Ireland is rising.
The figures followed the news of the mutilation of a family's cat in north Belfast. The pet had all four of its leg's cut off and left in the driveway of the owner's home on Wednesday.
Stephen Philpott, chief executive of the USPCA, said: "For many years my job was mostly taken up with accidental cruelty, negligence, people just didn't know any better.
"I don't care what age you are or how depraved you are, you really do know in this day and age that you shouldn't be cutting up cats."
Mid-Ulster UUP councillor Billy Armstrong also condemned the incident and the increase in attacks on animals across the province. He said: "This is the latest in a growing number of incidents involving serious animal cruelty. Those who carried out this attack are ‘without conscience’. What can the person(s) have possibly achieved via this act, other than leaving an extremely distressed and hurt owner?
"Only a few weeks ago there was the horrific incident in West Tyrone where 14 sheep and lambs were bludgeoned to death. These barbaric actions are the work of, ‘sadistic and downright evil people’. To harm any defenceless animal is totally unacceptable and must not be allowed to become the norm in society.”

A Co Antrim farmer has been convicted of a number of animal cruelty charges. 46-year-old James Steele from Glenavy, Co Antrim, was sentenced to five months imprisonment suspended for three years at Antrim Magistrates' Court.

Green Party Calls For Animal Cruelty Register
The Green Party is calling for an animal cruelty register after it was revealed the man responsible for the attack on Cody the border collie was freed from prison. Cody was doused in fuel and set on fire. East Belfast Councillor Ross Brown said he was "angered" by the experience Cody and the Agnew family suffered.

People who are cruel to animals will now face much tougher sentences. Agricultural Minister Michelle O'Neill and Justice Minister David Ford launched the Report of the Review of the Implementation of Animal Welfare Legislation in Belfast on Monday.
