Belfast Mayor Awards Liam Neeson

Newly appointed Lord Mayor of Belfast Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has presented Liam Neeson with the first-ever Belfast Ambassador Commendation as part of a three-day trip to New York.

An initiative of the new Lord Mayor, the Belfast Ambassador Award will be presented to ex-pats and locals who are outstanding advocates for the people and city of Belfast.

Tomorrow, Councillor Ó Muilleoir will meet with New York's Mayor in a bid to discuss ways to enhance business links between the two cities.

The duo will also progress plans for an inward investment mission from the United States to Belfast next Spring.

The Belfast Lord Mayor presented Ballymena-born Neeson with the award along with East Belfast MLA Sammy Douglas.

The Lord Mayor said: "No-one has been a greater ambassador for the arts and culture of Belfast, highlighting its burgeoning theatre scene and its new film-making fame. Liam Neeson has also been a tireless ally of the peace process and a standard-bearer for the transformation Belfast has undergone."

Other meetings during the Lord Mayor’s Stateside visit included Kathryn Wylde, CEO of Partnership for NYC, Mayor Cory Booker of Newark and various Irish American business leaders.

Councillor Ó Muilleoir also visited homeowners affected by Hurricane Sandy.

He will be back in Belfast on Saturday.

Belfast Mayor 'Feared For His Safety'
Belfast's Lord Mayor has told to a court that the attack during the Woodvale Park reopening on 6 August last year, put "his life in danger". Sinn Féin's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was giving evidence to a trial of three people accused of disorderly behaviour during the re-opening of the park, when he "feared for his safety in a loyalist protest".

Máirtín Ó Muilleoir New Mayor Of Belfast
Sinn Féin's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has been elected the new Lord Mayor of Belfast. The 53-year-old will be taking a break from his job as Managing Director of the Belfast Media Group and the Publisher of the Irish Echo in New York for the duration of his term.

New Shared Sports Facility Opens In Belfast
A new shared sports facility has been opened in Belfast. Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon and Arts and Leisure Minister Carál Ní Chuilín opened the new sports facility at Aquinas Diocesan Grammar School. A joint project between Aquinas and Ulster Rugby, the facility was funded by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and Belfast City Council.
