Cameron 'Proud' Of G8 In Fermanagh

David Cameron has said he is "really proud" that the G8 summit will be held this year in Fermanagh.

The PM said it would have been "unthinkable" to hold the event in Northern Ireland twenty years ago.

"I'm really proud that we're taking the G8 there to showcase this extraordinary part of our country - extraordinarily beautiful but also with wonderfully talented people," he told a press conference.

"Northern Ireland's prospects have been transformed by the peace process in the last 20 years, and I think we'll be able to show the world this is a modern and dynamic part of the United Kingdom. It's open for business, open for investment, a great place to visit.

"So I'm looking forward to welcoming the world there."

But the G8 is not being so openly welcomed by everyone. Anti-capitlaist protesters are staging demonstrations both in Fermanagh and Belfast to oppose what they see as the uneven distribution of wealth and power among nations.

The protesters will also be using the platform to highlight alleged abuses of human rights carried out by the countries being represented at the summit; including the Russian government's anti-gay laws and the US military's use of unmanned drones in Pakistan.

Security across NI has been stepped up, with an entire prison block being set aside to hold protesters arrested by the PSNI.
