Waste Management Firm Fined For Pollution

Waste management company Biffa Group has been fined £1,000 for a pollution offence after pleading guilty to making polluting discharges to a waterway at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

On 10 May 2012 Water Quality Inspectors discovered two brown coloured discharges from the Biffa site at Green Road, Ballyclare.

The discharges entered a tributary of the Green Burn which flows along the north western boundary of the site at Green Road Ballyclare.

The Inspectors proceeded to the location where the Green Burn enters the Six Mile Water.

Laboratory analysis of the samples taken at the time of the incident confirmed that they contained poisonous, noxious or polluting material which would have been potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
