First Ulster Scots Radio Station Announced

Northern Ireland's first Ulster Scots radio station has been awarded a community licence.

fUSe FM, based in Ballymoney, said it will "reflect the traditions, language and culture of Ulster Scots in Ballymoney and surrounding areas".

Also given the green light is Maghera-based Raidió G; Northern Ireland's first Irish language station outside Belfast.

North Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Robin Swann welcomed the news.

"In January of this year I wrote to Mr Jonathon Rose, the Director of Ofcom NI, to highlight the lack of a dedicated radio station for those with an affinity for Ulster-Scots while Irish language activists have had a significant presence on the air waves in the form of a full time radio station for some time," he said.

"I am delighted that with the awarding of this community radio licence to fUSe FM those from the Ulster Scots tradition have an opportunity to share such a vibrant and rewarding culture and language.

"A special word must also go to those from fUSe FM who have worked tirelessly to bring this licence to Ballymoney and who will no doubt have immense satisfaction from taking their message to the air waves."
