Afghanistan Health Reservists Return To NI

Health Minister Edwin Poots hosted a thanksgiving service yesterday for homecoming health reservists who had been serving in Afghanistan.

The service and medal parade was held at Hillsborough Castle.

Some 38 personnel of the 204 (North Irish) Field Hospital were deployed to the UK Medical Group hospital at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province.

The reservists were in the country to provide medical support to the Armed Forces and the Afghan National Army, the Taliban and Afghan civilians.

The Minister said: "I am very proud of the commitment and dedication shown by our serving troops in Afghanistan. All the soldiers here today can be proud of the job they have done. Working in such a volatile environment to provide experienced health care to other serving troops and civilians in extreme conditions is commendable.

"Our local health professionals who participate in tours overseas broaden their experience and learn skills that are subsequently of value to the public accessing services back home in Northern Ireland.

"Today’s event is an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of our serving men and women and to celebrate with their loved ones, their safe return."

The event was also attended by Minister of State for Northern Ireland, Mr Mike Penning, MP, the Director General of the Army Medical Services, Major General Ewan Carmichael and Brigadier Hugh Williamson, Commander 2 Medical Brigade.
