Sports Complex 'An Investment In A Healthier Future'
A new aquatic and leisure complex in Bangor has been described as "an investment in a healthier future" by Health Minister Edwin Poots.
Bangor Aurora Aquatic and Leisure Complex have been given a tour of the complex, which opened in March.
He said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to tour this wonderful facility which is an investment in the future health and wellbeing of the local population. I was particularly impressed to see the efforts being made at Aurora to offer inclusive activities for the entire community – including those with disabilities."
The Minister continued: "Physical inactivity is a major contributor to many of the public health challenges facing us in Northern Ireland – particularly that of overweight and obesity. This state of the art centre with its tremendous range of resources will encourage people to make healthier lifestyle choices in the longer term.
"Research shows that participation in regular physical activity may have significant benefits for health including boosting the immune system, helping to prevent heart disease, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, physical activity, whether through play, recreation, sports or team events, benefits the development of physical, social and emotional skills, and can also improve self-esteem and help increase confidence."
The centre includes the development of Northern Ireland's first FINA standard 50-metre swimming pool, assigned as a venue for the World Police & Fire Games, which will take place 1-10 August 2013.
The Minister said: "It is fitting that Aurora will act as a venue for the World Police and Fire Games this summer. It is an excellent example of what Northern Ireland has to offer and North Down Borough Council should be commended for bringing this initiative to fruition."
