Quarry Deaths - Funerals Take Place

The funerals of two people who drowned in a County Down disused quarry at the weekend have taken place today.

The bodies of Kevin O'Hare, 15, and Colin Polland, 39, were found at Paul's Quarry in the Glassdrumman Road area on Saturday evening.

It is understood that Mr Polland jumped into the water when a group of boys who were swimming got into difficulties. Both Kevin and Mr Polland died in the rescue attempt.

A funeral Mass was held at St Michael's Church, Dromara, County Down at 12:00 for Kevin O'Hare, while Mr Polland's funeral took place at St Patrick's Church, Bryansford, County Down, at 13:00.

Kevin was from the Dromara area, while Mr Polland was from Northern Ireland but had been living in England. It is reported that he was back in Northern Ireland on holiday.

A police investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

South Down SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said she was "deeply saddened" by the news.

"Any death is sad, but when deaths happen in tragic circumstances it is very poignant for the family, friends and local community of those who lost their lives," she said.

"My heartfelt sympathy and that of all the people goes out to the families, friends and relatives of the two men who lost their lives in such tragic circumstances in a disused quarry at the bottom of Spence Mountain in the Mournes."

Alliance South Down representative Cllr Patrick Clarke added: "I am deeply saddened that the lives of two people have been lost in such very tragic circumstances at the disused quarry.

"There is a deep sense of loss and shock in the local community.

"I would like to commend the efforts of the PSNI divers, the Fire and Rescue Service, and the coastguard who were involved in trying to rescue both men.

"This is an awful tragedy and my heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of Kevin O'Hare and Colin Polland."
