Rail And Bus Journeys Increase By 1.3m

The use of public transport in Northern Ireland has increased by 1.3m journeys in the past year.

NI Railway passenger journeys have risen by 0.9m while the bus companies (Ulsterbus and Metro) have increased by 0.4m.

Overall the increase across Translink is nearly 2%.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: "Over the last few years we have invested in new buses and trains to offer people an attractive alternative to the car and it is working.

"I want to congratulate Translink for continuing to deliver well above the targets they have been set. In 2011/12, over 77m people used public transport. During 2012/13, provisional figures show this number has risen to over 78.5m.

"This is an incredible rise and proves that when people are provided with a bus and train service that delivers on quality and efficiency then they will use it."

Catherine Mason, Translink Group Chief Executive, said: "Our aim is to offer integrated travel solutions that are attractive, sustainable and good value. This is a great result - over a million more fare paying customers compared to last year; customer satisfaction is also very high which shows we are getting it right."
