GAA Up For EU Award

The Gaelic Athletic Association has been nominated for a European Citizen's Prize 2013 award for its cross-border work in Ireland.

Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly nominated the organisation.

A national jury made up of Labour's Phil Prendergast, Independent MEP Marian Harkin and Fine Gael's Gay Mitchell endorsed the nomination.

The prize is awarded to "citizens or organisations having contributed to promoting better mutual understanding and closer integration between citizens or to facilitating cross-border or transnational cooperation within the EU".

A statement from the European Parliament said: "The Gaelic Athletic Association / Cumann Lúthchleas Gael is a 32 county sporting and cultural organisation that has a presence on all five continents.

"It is Ireland's largest sporting organisation and is celebrated as one of the great amateur sporting associations in the world today.

"It is part of the Irish consciousness and plays an influential role in Irish society that extends far beyond the basic aim of promoting Gaelic games."

A Chancellery in Brussels, chaired by Vice-President Anni Podimata will select this year's maximum 50 European laureates in June.

The winners will receive a medal of honour and will be invited to a joint event in Brussels in October.
