Rod-Caught Salmon Ban Introduced
A ban on the sale of rod-caught salmon is to come into effect in Northern Ireland, bringing the area in line with regulations in Great Britain and the Republic.
The move is the first in a series of conservation measures aimed at protecting stocks of Atlantic salmon. Regulations are now encouraging "catch and release" methods for salmon fishing, which will become mandatory in 2014.
The new law is also expected to reduce poaching.
The ban on will also extend to sea trout.
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leister (DCAL) is responsible for all salmon and inland fisheries in Northern Ireland, except for the Foyle and Carlingford areas.
The Department has asked all anglers to voluntarily adopt "catch and release" of any salmon caught.
Anglers are also asked to use less harmful methods when they fish, such as flies with barbless hooks.
DCAL is also commissioning work to improve conditions in areas of rivers where salmon spawn and their fry develop.
