Firearm Discovered In East Belfast

A gun has been recovered by police in the Short Strand area of east Belfast on Wednesday morning.

The police search was in connection with dissident republic activity.

A number of homes were evacuated during the search.

Alliance Belfast Cllr Marie Hendron said: "I would like to praise all those police officers who were involved in this operation. There is now one less gun on our streets today. The community does not want these weapons on our streets and is thankful for the actions of the Police.

"We must all show our support for the Police and the rule of law by passing on information that can lead to more weapons being taken off our streets."
