New Service Launched To Help People With Respiratory Conditions
Health Minister Edwin Poots has announced a new service aimed at helping people with respiratory conditions who are taking multiple medications to manage their medicines more effectively.
The Medicines Use Review (MUR) service, which comes into effect in April 2013, allows community pharmacists to review medication face to face with the patient and to offer their professional advice on how to best to manage prescribed medications.
The Minister said: "This is good for patients. The proposed vision for our public health framework is to ensure that all people are enabled and supported in achieving their full health potential and wellbeing.
"This new service which has been welcomed by the Regional Respiratory Advisory Group will maximise this support for people with respiratory problems.
"I want to see best use of medications that will benefit the patient in the long-term."
The new service aligns to the objective of delivering services closer to home as set out in Transforming Your Care. It will see an increased clinical role for community pharmacy as underpinned by the ongoing refresh of the strategy for the provision of pharmaceutical services in the community.

New Children's Respiratory Service
A new children's respiratory testing service has been launched at Belfast's Royal Hospital for Sick Children. The new state-of-the-art service, established by Prof Mike Shields, will be equipped with a range of specialist equipment, including a Jaeger MasterScreen system for measuring precisely how well children's lungs work.

Health Minister Robin Swann has welcomed the launch of a new GP-led service to improve lung health in the Armagh/Dungannon area. The innovative Early Respiratory Diagnostic Hub, based at Moy Health Centre, will serve thousands of patients from 23 General Practice surgeries through the provision of accessible and advanced lung function testing.

First NI Motorway Service Stations Announced
Northern Ireland’s first ever motorway service stations have been granted planning permission. Currently, motorists have to leave the motorway in order to find a service station, but the two developments planned for the M2, along with the two to follow on the M1, will offer drivers direct slip road access from both directions.

Winter Safety Service Staff Ready To 'Keep People Moving'
Some 300 winter safety service staff and 130 gritters were deployed by the Department for Infrastructure in an effort to keep people moving following a warning for snow and ice. Twelve specialist snow blowers are also available to be deployed if required.
