Patient Dies After Ambulance Crashes

A male patient has died after the ambulance he was in crashed in Belfast on Thursday.

The seriously ill man, believed to be in his 50s, was being taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital when the ambulance and a car collided on the Grosvenor Road, at its junction with the Westlink.

Three paramedics were also taken to hospital, with two being treated for chest pains and head and neck injuries, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The 51-year-old female driver of the black Renault Espace also received medical treatment, but has since been discharged.

The front of the ambulance sustained significant impact damage causing both driver and passenger airbags to deploy, but it is thought the man may have died prior to the accident.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "At this stage we cannot say that the death occurred as a result of the collision."

The Grosvenor Road was closed in both directions between Grosvenor Road Bridge at the entrance to the Westlink and Cullingtree Road for a number of hours yesterday.

Health bosses will now launch an investigation to analyse the circumstances of the accident.
