L'Derry To Host Sporting Achievement Celebration

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has invited people from across Northern Ireland to come to L'Derry for an evening celebrating Northern Ireland's sporting achievements in 2012.

"Last year was a remarkable year for sport," Minister Ní Chuilín said.

"I want everyone to come together to celebrate all of our sporting achievements. The event in Derry will bring together sports people as well as the London Olympic and Paralympic games makers and torchbearers. Most importantly I want to extend an invitation to all sports fans to mark a year of success and accomplishment."

The event, Celebrating Sporting Success in 2012 – A Remarkable Year, will be held on 1 May in The Venue at Ebrington Square.

The Minister continued: "I hope as many people as possible take this opportunity to join me for what promises to be a night to remember. Along with entertainment and a chance to meet local sporting heroes such as Rory Best everyone will be able to see sporting demonstrations and join in.

"This is a celebration of every sport, and all sports people regardless of their age, background or ability. As such, it will mark not only the tangible benefits of sport – such as medals, trophies and championships – but also the less-recognised advantages. Sport makes a real and profound difference in people’s lives; it impacts on physical health, emotional wellbeing and is a social outlet for many."

Reflecting on the sporting achievements of 2012, Minister Ní Chuilín said: "The All Ireland Torch relay and the Olympic and Paralympic Games represented sport on a spectacular and impressive scale. As well as our elite athletes who came home with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals many more local people were involved in making the events a success. From the athletes, friends and families who supported them on their road to success to the local torch bearers and games makers. But aside from the remarkable summer of sport our local athletes compete all year round and there are many wonderful achievements to celebrate from 2012.

"That momentum and success has continued into 2013. We have seen a spectacular start to the City of Culture and are looking forward to August to the World Police and Fire Games. We are taking all opportunities available to showcase this wonderful place to an international audience and inspire our young people."
