Car Dealer Fined Over 'Clocked' Car
A Ballyclare car dealer has been fined at Belfast Magistrates' Court for selling an accident-damaged car to one customer and a 'clocked' car to anther customer.
James Redpath, who traded from Ballynure Road, was ordered to pay a total of £1,125 in compensation to the consumers involved.
Mr Redpath had clocked one of the cars, meaning he had altered its milage reading to falsely make the car look more attractive to a buyer.
The dealer was found guilty of two charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPR’s).
The investigation followed a complaint from a customer who purchased a BMW car from James Redpath in June 2011. He later discovered, after carrying out a HPI check, that the vehicle had been recorded as a category C insurance loss. The consumer had not been informed of this fact at any stage of his dealings with James Redpath.
Then in the same month a second consumer purchased a Nissan X-trail car from James Redpath. At the time of the sale there were 82,000 miles on the odometer. It was later discovered that the vehicle had been 'clocked', having a previously recorded mileage of 156,000 miles when sold by an auction house in Scotland in the same month.
Pair Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
Two people have been convicted at Belfast Magistrates' court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.
32-year-old Andrew McCarey of The Glade, Mossley, claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £4,317 while failing to declare employment. He was given 150 hours of community service.
Stuart Thomson, 31, of Gray Mount Parade, Newtownabbey, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful receipt of Employment and Support Allowance totalling £257.
Both are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
Thieves Rob Abandoned Lorry
Thieves have taken advantage of the recent bad weather to steal hi-tech broadcasting equipment from a lorry that became stuck in snow.
The vehicle was stranded at Hannahstown Hill in Belfast on Friday. When the owners of the vehicle arrived the next day, it had been broken into.
Among the items stolen were Red camera bodies, memory cards, card readers, Arri ultra prime lenses and follow-focus equipment.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw the white box van being broken into, or who know the location of the equipment.
