Mother-Of-Five Jailed For 'Glassing' Assault
A 28-year-old mother-of-five has been jailed at Belfast Crown Court after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.
Julie Apsley, from Rathmullan Drive, Newtownards, pushed a glass into the face of Lisa Smyth on 28 October 2010 following an argument.
The court heard the two women were involved in a "robust verbal exchange" while in a car with other friends.
Apsley lashed out, striking Ms Smyth with a glass and causing a substantial laceration to her right cheek.
The injured woman underwent plastic surgery but has been left with a significant scar running from her eye to her nose.
A defence lawyer asked Judge Corinne Philpott QC to consider a suspended sentence, however, commenting on the seriousness of the offence, the judge imposed a jail term of 6 months, with a further 12 months on licensed parole.
