Submission Expected Over A5 Carriageway
The Department for Regional Development (DRD) has until today to make submissions in a legal case regarding the proposed A5 dual carriageway project.
Last week, a judge said he was minded to quash the decision to proceed with the build after saying the DRD failed to carry out necessary environmental checks.
He said they should have carried out a Habitats Directive assessment, but they had not done so.
Speaking after the decision last week, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said the department would "now prepare the necessary submissions in relation to the Habitats Directive."
Judicial review proceedings centred on the decision to press ahead with two sections of the route, for which the Northern Ireland Executive has approved £280m. Work on the project has been put on hold due to the legal intervention. However, uncertainty surrounds the overall project after the Irish government downgraded its funding due to challenging economic circumstances.
Farmers, businessmen and landowners have also joined together under the Alternative A5 Alliance grouping in a legal challenge to the planned stretch of road between Londonderry and Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone.
The A5 dual carriageway would link Dublin with the north west of Northern Ireland.

Officials 'Must Be Held Accountable' Over A5
The DUP's Chair of the Regional Development Committee Jimmy Spratt has said that officials need to be "held accountable" following a judge's decision not to allow the A5 development scheme to go ahead. Yesterday, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said he would not be appealing the ruling, made by Mr Justice Stephens.

A5 Decision Quashed
A High Court judge has quashed the decision to go ahead with a new £330m dual carriageway project between L'Derry and Aughnacloy. The Department for Regional Development now has a seven-day stay to lodge any appeal to the ruling on the £330m A5 development. The proposed scheme is the largest of its kind ever in Northern Ireland.

Call For Full Investigation To Be Carried Out Over Western Trust Underspend
The SDLP is calling for a full investigation to be carried out after figures revealed an underspend on learning disability in the Western Trust area. Foyle MLA, Mark H Durkan, said while the latest revelation was "shocking" it came as "no huge surprise". He said: "Answers are important but we're also demanding action be taken.
