NI Schools Await Closure News

Northern Ireland's primary schools are waiting to hear if they have been earmarked for closure.

Falling pupil numbers, poor education provision and overspending are the reasons some schools may be at risk.

Last year, all 846 primary schools were examined and the education and library boards will reveal today which schools will be forced to close, or merger.

It is understood rural schools are to have 105 pupils while urban schools have 140, however more than 300 schools do not meet this criteria.

A further nine schools overspent their budget by 50% or more.

Any proposals revealed will have to go through a lengthy consultation process before being considered by the Minister for Education.
