Waste Management Site Planned
£240m is to be invested in a planned waste management site near Mallusk in County Antrim.
The new development would be one of the biggest single infrastructure schemes in the region, and would deal with waste from eleven council areas in Northern Ireland.
In response to requirements identified by waste management group arc21, the Becon Consortium has developed plans to co-locate the development, along with a visitor centre, at the Hightown Quarry site on the Boghill Road.
It is thought the plant could create 340 jobs and generate enough power for 30,000 homes.
The development would sort recyclables and treat the remaining waste to make it more combustible.
It is expected the new plant could help Northern Ireland meet EU targets on landfill diversion and avoid fines.
It could also contribute to Northern Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions targets, reducing approximately 57,500 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year, relative to sending waste to landfill.
A public consultation is due to begin shortly.
