Francie Molloy Wins Mid-Ulster
Sinn Féin's Francie Molloy has won the Mid-Ulster by-election.
Mr Molloy fulfilled electoral predictions with a majority win, securing 17,462 (47%) of votes, compared to his nearest rival, the joint unionist candidate, Nigel Lutton, who received 12,781 (34%).
The SDLP's Patsy McGlone polled 6,478, while the Alliance Party's Eric Bullick secured on 487.
The by-election was triggered by deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness's decision to stand down as MP for the area, as Sinn Féin seeks to end double-jobbing throughout the party.
Nigel Lutton was fielded by the Democratic Unionist Party and the Ulster Unionist Party as a joint unionist candidate, in a bid to secure unionist votes.
Two Ulster Unionist MPs, Basil McCrea and John McCallister, left their party over the decision, which they described as a return to 'tribal politics'.
Speaking after the result was declared this morning, Mr Molloy said: "I would like to thank my colleague and comrade Martin McGuinness for the work he has done this past 15 years in moving Mid Ulster forward."
"Martin is going to be a hard act to follow, I understand that, but we will try our best to do that and we will continue to build the process and work with everyone - I want to represent all the people of Mid Ulster, not just those who voted for me, not just the Sinn Féin support."

Condolences have been expressed to the family circle of the late Captain Austin Ardill MC, an MP for Carrickfergus in the former Stormont Parliament. East Antrim MLA Ken Robinson was commenting on the sad news and said: "All who met with Austin were immediately struck by his sense of dignity, friendship and acute political awareness.
