McGuinness In Dissident Death Threat
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has received a death threat from a dissident republican group in L'Derry.
The Sinn Féin MLA was contacted by a senior PSNI officer on Wednesday evening and was informed of the "real and active" threat against his life.
The PSNI said it was taking the threat seriously.
Mr McGuinness said: "Last night I was visited at home by the PSNI who informed me of a real and active threat against me from a dissident group in Derry. They linked the threat to my condemnation of the recent attempted mortar attack in the city and other remarks made in support of the PSNI.
"It says much about the mentality of those controlling groups like the one behind the threat that in their warped logic threatening Irish Republicans and their families somehow advances the cause of Irish reunification.
"I am very sure of the ground I stand on. I am also very sure that it is the path shared by Republicans across this island genuinely interested in building a new agreed Ireland, Republicans who put Ireland before ego, criminality and self gain."
Many Northern Irish politicians across the political spectrum have received death threats and suffered attacks from paramilitary groups on both sides of the divide, since Belfast City Councillors voted in December to restrict the flying of the union flag at City Hall.
On Wednesday, the SDLP's Conal McDevitt received a bullet and a sympathy card in the post.
Mr McDevitt said: "These threats only strengthen my determination that we must work towards a better future for everyone in this region, and will not prevent me from doing the job I have been democratically elected to do. The foundations for a new society laid by the Good Friday Agreement will never be undermined by those who seek to drag us back to violence.
"These are the acts of fascists and they will be defeated democratically."
