Mid-Ulster Voting Begins
Voting has begun in the Mid-Ulster by-election.
The election was triggered by the resignation of Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness.
The deputy First Minister stepped down from his position as part of the party's move to end 'double-jobbing' at Stormont.
Four candidates are running, with Francie Molloy of Sinn Féin expected to win comfortably.
The SDLP's Patsy McGlone is also running alongside Eric Bullick of Alliance and the controversial joint-unionist candidate Nigel Lutton.
Mr Lutton was named by the Democratic Unionist Party and Ulster Unionist Party as a joint candidate, in a move to pull together unionist votes in the constituency.
Ulster Unionist Party MLAs Basil McCrea and John McCallister recently left the UUP, citing the decision to run a joint candidate as 'tribal politics'.
Counting begins after polling ends at 22:00 tonight. A result is expected early on Friday morning.
Francie Molloy was proposed as the Sinn Féin candidate by Martin McGuinness in a move supported by Michelle O’Neill, the Sinn Féin Minister for Agriculture.
Mr McGuinness said: "He will make an exceptional MP and representative for all the people of Mid-Ulster."
First Minister and DUP leader Peter Robinson has been calling on voters to vote for Nigel Lutton and "maximise support for the Union."
"While there may be those in the constituency who are not in the habit of voting for a Pro-Union candidate the election is a straight choice between Nigel Lutton who will work on behalf of the constituency and a candidate who will refuse to take his seat and therefore, once again, leave Mid-Ulster bereft of representation," he said.
"People should be in no doubt that their vote will make a difference. I urge everyone in Mid Ulster to use their vote wisely and support Nigel Lutton."
