McCann Embraces Women's Economic Independence

Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has issued her support for women's economic independence.

Earlier she opened a conference at Stranmillis College entitled 'Getting a Fair Share?'.

It was organised by the Equality Commission and focused on how gender inequalities impacted on women's economic independence.

The Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister has lead responsibility for promoting gender equality across government.

Speaking at the event the Junior Minister said: "One of the things that affects the economic independence of many women is the availability of childcare. For the past three months, the Department has been garnering public opinion on the childcare needs of people here. We wanted our Childcare Strategy to be fully informed by the views of the people it will benefit.

"Good quality, affordable childcare that is accessible to all can only enhance the economic independence of women. Work on the development and implementation of the Childcare Strategy is now underway."

The United Nations will shortly examine the terms of its obligations under the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against women (CEDAW).

She added: "We must aim to achieve a society in which men and women are equally respected and valued as individuals, and in which there is equality in terms of opportunity, rights and responsibilities.

"I would like to thank the Equality Commission for arranging this informative and thought provoking conference, and the shadow report they have drafted in relation to the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women."

Other speakers at the conference included Michael Wardlow and Evelyn Collins CBE, Equality Commission, Lynn Carvill, Women’s Sector Lobbyist with Women’s Resource and Development Agency, Tracy Meharg, Business Solutions Group, and Bronagh Hinds, DemocraShe.
