Belfast Man Denies Italian Mafia Link
A man from west Belfast has reportedly been linked to an Italian investigation into money laundering by the Calabrian mafia.
A solicitor for Harry Fitzsimmons has denied reports his client was arrested in Italy on Tuesday, the BBC reports.
Dan McGuinness, the solicitor stated: "Mr Fitzsimmons totally refutes the allegations being made against him which are unfounded.
"He has not at any time been contacted by the police in either Italy or Northern Ireland and has been carrying out a legitimate business as a promoter of properties in south Italy."
Italian police are investigating the Ndrangheta, the Calabrian-based crime network, and its activities in tourism.
One of the Mr Fitzsimmons four-property firms has been involved in promoting Calabrian holiday homes to British and Irish buyers.
Claudio Petrozziello, district commander of the financial police in Italy, confirmed Fitzsimmons had a previous conviction for an IRA bomb attack but told the BBC that he have no evidence linking the Belfast man to the crime.
He said: "I have no evidence to imagine a link, a concrete link, or even an eventual link, with the organisation."
