Call For Hammond Not To Proceed With Job Losses
SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat has written to the Under Secretary of State for Transport, Stephen Hammond calling on him not to proceed with any job losses at the Motor Vehicle Licensing Centre in Coleraine at least until he meets the Assembly's Minister for the Environment Alex Atwood on 5 March.
Mr Dallat: "There are worrying vibes circulating in Coleraine that a decision is imminent on the future of 280 employees working in the Motor Vehicle Licensing Centre in Coleraine.
"I sincerely hope this is not true because I believe there is a commitment to meet our Minister, Alex Atwood, before any decision is made on centralising jobs in Swansea. There is also a long-standing commitment from the Treasury to find alternative work for those people who may lose their jobs as a result of the plan to centralise jobs in Wales.
"If this proposal was to go ahead with no provision for those who would be left unemployed it would have a serious impact not just on the people directly affected but also on the travel to work area which affects not just Coleraine but Limavady and Ballymoney.
"In the last year only 3 potential inward investors visited Coleraine at the behest of Invest Northern Ireland and given that unemployment is at a record high the future prospects for people in that area are very poor, particularly for young people in the age group 16-25.
"I have spoken to our Minister Mr Atwood today and he remains committed to the employees at County Hall and shares my serious concern if any decision has been made without the prior meeting agreed to."
